Wellspring

Jesus said in John 7:38 those who believe in Him "will have streams of living water flowing from deep within them."

Here is a big difference, perhaps THE difference in the way the Holy Spirit functioned before Jesus and now after His ministry. In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit "moved on" or "came upon" prophets, judges, priests, etc at times. But now the Holy Spirit is being promised by Jesus as indwelling the believer, residing in the believer, creating continual power that would flow out of us, not just into us!

The implication? The power of God is now available everyday to every believer in Jesus! God's power doesn't just come to help us, His power is within us like a wellspring. Unlike the people of the Old Testament who occasionally witnessed the effects of God's power, we can be filled with the very source of His power as a wellspring deep within us!

The main word for power in the New Testament is from a Greek word dunamis. It has been often pointed out that from this word we also get the words dynamo, dynamic and dynamite. All of those evoke strong thoughts on what the Holy Spirit can do through us. But for this post notice the word "dynamo" which is a generator, something that creates energy. That's what this wellspring is, the source of power, indwelling us, generating power for every day and every situation!

We do not pray and simply hope God shows up. Whatever need, problem or battle I walk into, if I am there, so is He! No matter what difficult person or situation you are facing, the source of love, joy, peace, gentleness, meekness and more can still flow out of your heart and your mouth.

So what problem are you walking in today? What battle are you facing? What need is present in your life? Ask the Holy Spirit to begin working right in the middle of it. That's the power Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would bring to those who believe in Him.
