MTV, Miley and Parenting

I’ll bet you’re glad you didn’t let your teen watch the MTV Video Music Awards this past Sunday night. By now you’ve probably heard about the over-the-line antics of Miley Cyrus – and maybe seen a few stills of the, uh, musical number she, uh, “performed.” And you probably thought, “Whew! Glad we were busy doing something else and my teen didn’t see it.”

Then they went to school Monday morning. Their friends asked if they saw it. Texts had been hopping across cell towers all night long – with pics – and details. But your teen need not worry that they missed what everyone was buzzing about because MTV has the show available for your teen to stream online. The whole show. They didn’t even need to be in front of your tv under your supervision. Heck, you don’t even have to know that they were watching it. They don’t even need a computer. As long as they own a smartphone – or know someone they can borrow one from.

We too easily forget. Our kids are growing up in a world where porn is not just available, it is being shoved down their throat. And that’s not all that’s being force-fed them. If you are a parent, I encourage you, please read the article at the attached link and find out for yourself, without having to view the “show.” The article explains what viewers saw Sunday night and what every teen with access to MTV.com can see today – and tomorrow – and the next day.

As parents, our guidance and supervisory responsibilities do not end at the bus stop when we hand our kids off to other adults. They still need our guidance. They need help setting parameters. And they need to know they can ask you anything. You'd better get over your timidity. In today’s world there can be no subject that is off limits for you and your child to discuss. Because if you won’t talk to them about, someone else like Miley or Gaga or MTV or their friends will.
