wednesday - Jesus is less than 48 hours from crucifixion - and if He were just an ordinary man He wouldn't even know
crowds still love Him - disciples still jockey for position with Him - most of them - Jesus knows today that judas - one of His disciples - has arranged to help the self-righteous religious leaders of that day arrest Him - quietly - away from the crowds that love Him - in secret - without threat of public outcry
and the bible says something happened that day that is only mentioned one other place in all of scripture - Jesus wept - but He wasn't crying about judas - He wasn't crying because of the suffering and rejection He would endure on Friday - He didn't even cry that His mother would have to watch it all unfold
Jesus wept over the city of jerusalem - one of His communities you might say - not because He was leaving and returning to heaven soon - it wasn't that the temple and buildings of jerusalem would be torn down about 40 years later
He wept over the people - as His own children - lost - confused - hurting - dying - people - He forgot His own coming suffering - and He said
how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and you were not willing
get the picture? - God is an awesome story-teller! - and in one short sentence Jesus paints a picture of the depth of His passion for them - and for all people - under a hen her chicks find protection - safety - strength - shelter - peace - comfort - instruction - and Jesus weeps because He wants to give the same - and more - to all people!
as christians - which means Christ-like - we should weep too - there should be times that our passion for the unchurched in our communities causes us to forget everything else - and do whatever necessary to help Jesus gather them under His wings - this week is one of those times!
it's wednesday - Jesus doesn't have much time left this week - and neither do we!
