exodus 20:15 you shall not steal
we all agree - right? we are not supposed to steal - but what? and how? does it matter what you are stealing? does it matter if you use a gun? or knife? or pencil? or checkbook? or timecard? or copier? or contract? or copyright? or legality? or feigned ignorance?
the definition is to take without permission - so no matter what it is - no matter how you take it - if you got it without permission it is stealing
exodus 22:5 even addresses passive theft - that is when we receive gain that costs another person their property or money - if a man grazes his livestock...and he lets the livestock loose and they graze in the field of another man, he must make restitution from the best of his own
ever heard the saying 'finders keepers'? leviticus 6:3 says not if you know who it belongs to - deuteronomy 22:4 even speaks to us having responsibility to help return property back to it's rightful owner - even if we didn't take it
leviticus 19:13 reminds us to pay others for the work they do for us - that includes employees and day-laborers - this is so important that God says you shouldn't withhold wages even for a day
so in the eyes of God stealing is more than a crime - like the other commandments before it this commandment is about the condition and attitude of your heart
