commandment #5

exodus 20:12 honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you

the apostle paul quotes this commandment in ephesians - he notes it has a particular distinction - a promise is attached to it - long life in the place God gives you

consider what that means to you - the place God has given you - not me - not all of us - but the place of His blessing - His calling - His promises - in your life - you can live there a long time!

but to receive that promise you have to fulfill the pre-requisite - which is honor your parents - don't stop reading - because if you have parents this applies to you - got parents?

they are to be loved - respected - reverenced - their corrections are to be submitted to when you are young - and their advice is to be received when you are not

their attitudes are to be tolerated - they are to be honoured in your thoughts - your gestures - in your words behind their back - and in their presence - they are to be highly esteemed - they are to be spoken honorably to - and of - they are to be assisted when aged - maintained in a comfortable way

these requirements have no expiration date - as long as you have parents you have these duties

if you live in your parents' home there is specific instruction
colossians 3:20-24 children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord
proverbs 1:8-9 hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching

if you no longer live in their home there is still specific instruction
1 timothy 5:3-4 honor widows who are truly widows. but if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God
paul's instructions to timothy here are for how the church takes care of widows - he basically says no widow should have need if she has children or grandchildren - hmmm - enough said
