culture junk part 4

job 31:1 "i have made a covenant with my eyes”

the hebrew word that is rendered “covenant” in the above verse is from another hebrew word meaning “cut” - in other words job had cut a deal with his eyes - he would not only refrain from looking at things he shouldn’t - he also promised himself he would not even look at something he did not need!

if you don’t see it - you can’t want it - samson should have made the same covenant.

judges 16:1 then samson went to gaza and saw a harlot there, and went in to her.

the hralot was delilah - the lady who tricked samson - had him captured by his arch enemy - they put out his eyes - he should have made the covenant with his eyes while he still had them - and eve should have, too

genesis 3:6 so when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

she ate the forbidden fruit - got herself kicked out of the garden of eden - and her husband too - if only she hadn’t listened to the temptation to look she would have never wanted - and she would not have showed it to adam - wait - come to think of it - adam should have made the covenant, too - and david should have made the covenant

2 samuel 11:2 then it happened one evening that david arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. and from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.

that is the beginning of the story of david's great sin - he saw - then wanted - then asked - then went after - then tried to quickly cover it up - and finally arranged a murder to do so

sin is a progression - stop it early or it can lead to all kinds of sin - and trouble - there was also a guy named achan that should have made the covenant

joshua 7:21 when i saw among the spoils a beautiful babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, i coveted them and took them. and there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.

right after the israelis won the awesome victory at jericho – wait - awesome isn’t a strong enough word - it was a totally one-sided blowout - a rout - a beat-down - a good walloping - a romp - a thrashing - the ultimate sweep - but in the middle of that battle achan saw some nice clothes and money - gold and silver coins - he took them - he hid them - though he knew he shouldn’t - that's why God didn’t help them at the next battle - and they were embarrassed by being defeated by the little village with a little name - ai

awesome teaching moment here - think about it - they were embarrassed - not by a huge thing - but a little thing - what embarrassment have you also experienced or risked just so you could see or experience something insignificant - something you didn’t even need?

make a covenant with your eyes - and your ears - and your mind - and your heart - especially your heart

proverbs 4:23 keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. 24 put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you. 25 let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. 26 ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. 27 do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil.
